The America’s Cup finally kicked off at Club Bacocho in Puerto Escondido today. Here’s everything you need to know about what happened on Day 1.
It was a hot 32 degrees today on the courts at Club Bacocho as 12 teams kicked off their America’s Cup campaigns across three groups.

Group A played their matches in the morning. Chile earned a clean sweep winning all three bouts against Atlanta in the Men’s D1 and D2 games plus the Women’s Division. The Men’s Division 2 game went to 7-6 in the first set and could have gone Atlanta’s way. Toronto got the better of San Francisco in two of the three games, winning both Men’s games (D1+D2) in tight games. Chile sits in first for Group A on nine points, with Toronto second on six points.
In the afternoon Group B’s San Diego defeated Connecticut in all three games. The Men’s D1 match went to the tie breaker and San Diego won 10-7. Montreal also won their three matches against Austin. The second set of the Men’s D1 match went to 7-5 which Montreal held on to win. The Women’s Division match saw an exciting 7-6 first set and a 6-2 second set. Both clean sweeps put San Diego and Montreal undefeated on top of Group B with nine points.
In the evening matches under the glow of the lights Miami had a very entertaining match against hometown heroes from Oaxaca. In the Men’s D1 match it was Club Bacocho who took the honours in a tight match winning 7-6, 6-4. But Miami came back to win the Men’s D2 6-3, 6-1 and the Women’s Division 6-0, 6-2. In the remaining Group C match, Calgary won the Men’s D2 match in a tie break 10-7 to beat Charlotte 2-1. Miami and Calgary are both on top of Group C with six points.
